Volume 9 contains less volleyball and more character development for the team。 In the chapter "Direct Sunlight" （also the 2nd episode of the 2nd season）， we're introduced to Hitoka Yachi， a nervous first-year who is recruited by Kiyoko to be the team's manager。 The way each of the guys on the team reacts to her is hilarious， and her friendship with Hinata provides some good character evolution for her （"Villager B"） as she has to decide if she really wants the manager's job。Hinata and Kageyama m Volume 9 contains less volleyball and more character development for the team。 In the chapter "Direct Sunlight" （also the 2nd episode of the 2nd season）， we're introduced to Hitoka Yachi， a nervous first-year who is recruited by Kiyoko to be the team's manager。 The way each of the guys on the team reacts to her is hilarious， and her friendship with Hinata provides some good character evolution for her （"Villager B"） as she has to decide if she really wants the manager's job。Hinata and Kageyama meet Ushijima Wakatoshi， the best spiker in the prefecture， while training and this provides one of the best scenes in the manga （and anime）。 Ushijima likens the team to soil， either barren （Karasuno） or fertile （Shiratorizawa）。 The scene Furudate draws illustrating this is iconic， and it also includes one of the best badass boasts in the entire series， courtesy of Hinata: "I'm Shoyo Hinata， from the Karasuno parking lot。 And I'm going to Nationals after I kick your ass。"The story moves at a good pace， despite the team not being knee-deep in volleyball games or practices。 No omakes this time around， but there are drawings and comments on pages between chapters。 。。。more

This volume cracked me up because it shows that no matter how good you are at volleyball， school is still about tests and grades。 It's especially funny to me that Kageyama is bad at school - he seems so stoic that everyone expects him to also be book smart， but nope。Also seeing Hinata's infectious optimism and determination "infect" Yachi is so rewarding。 He may be a tad ridiculous， but he's also someone who will do what he can to make you believe in yourself。 This volume cracked me up because it shows that no matter how good you are at volleyball， school is still about tests and grades。 It's especially funny to me that Kageyama is bad at school - he seems so stoic that everyone expects him to also be book smart， but nope。Also seeing Hinata's infectious optimism and determination "infect" Yachi is so rewarding。 He may be a tad ridiculous， but he's also someone who will do what he can to make you believe in yourself。 。。。more
